Season Review 3rd XI

The 2021 season saw DCCL introduce a Sunday league for participating teams 2nd & 3rd XI's to give valuable senior cricket experience to up and coming juniors as well as giving game time to players on the fringes and also an opportunity for people with very little experience to enjoy the game.

OG kicked off the season with a narrow defeat away to Hazel Grove before recording 3 victories on the bounce (Whaley Bridge at home, Broadbottom and Birch Vale away) to put us up towards the top of the league and in real contention.

However, defeat in the next 2 matches put a real dent in our hopes of winning the league, a narrow home defeat to Chapel that we really should have won and a disappointing loss away to Whaley Bridge.

We then rallied with a superb performance to defeat top of the table Hazel Grove before running out of steam a week later with a defeat at eventual joint champions Chapel.

We finished the season off with an enjoyable win at home to Broadbottom to leave us 3rd in the league (5 wins, 4 losses), 2 points behind winners Chapel/Hazel Grove.

Not all games were recorded on the app or in the book so it would be unfair to post definitive stats but needless to say it was the young guns who led the way with bat and ball, ably backed up by their more senior team mates!

Individuals to mention with a couple of brilliant 50’s and other knocks by our top run scorer Ethan who was equally solid with the ball throughout, as was his opening partner Tom picking up 5 for in our last game at home. Noticeable improvements in the season for Seth and Conor J really coming into their own by the end with ball and bat almost putting on a 50 partnership at one point. Paul pulled off some blinding catches in the field, our reliable hands. Great to see a return from Dec who was brilliant with the ball and to welcome Dave Burdis with some solid opening performances.

Nice to see a few games with two father son pairs out there, Dec and Seth and Den and Tom, and one with a father daughter being Den and Freya.

The main thing to come out of the season though was just how enjoyable it was. Every match was played in a great spirit whilst maintaining a competitive edge so applause to all teams involved for this. Congratulations to Chapel/Hazel as well, deserved winners.

The team work, camaraderie and enthusiasm shown by OG throughout the season made it a pleasure to represent this fantastic club.

We learnt a lot from this season and hope to go onto better things next year!
