Another day watching out the window as the rain fell for the OG women, but good news came early afternoon thanks to the ground at Dinting being deemed fit to play. This was the first away game of the season for the Old Glossop Women’s team, so the ladies made their way over to the ground off Simmondley Lane.
Old Glossop were first to bat tonight and the away game nerves were noticeable in the run up to the game. A strong start came from our first batting pair of Amna Ahmed and Netty Bell as they took to the crease and set us in motion with a strong pairing leading to 35 runs for Old Glossop with only 1 wicket lost.
As the innings really got underway, Dinting got visibly more comfortable in the field. A strong effort was displayed by some players entirely new to the sport and only on their second game played. Some amazing boundary stopping slides and dives from Jane W as well as some quick play at the wicket stopped OG in their tracks from pushing any higher with their batting total. A couple more wickets fell, and Old Glossop had to knuckle down and push on with their batting to try and set a more intimidating total for the innings.
Becca Hodgkins bounced back from being the only wicket lost last week to a run score of 22 with some clever play of some boundary breaking strikes as well as some clever knocks just out of the track. Partner Emma Jones supported with well aimed shots and additional runs along the wicket.
Final pair Becky Beasley and Anna Lunn raised the bar and batting total for Old Glossop to a total at the end of the first innings of 317 for Old Glossop with 4 wickets lost. This was a target we all knew Dinting were capable of equalling following a 321 score run at Charlesworth away last week, and so an equally competent fielding effort would be needed for OG to achieve a win and the 3 points associated to that in the League table.
Soon enough, Dinting were at the crease, with their opening batters prepared to strike as Old Glossop set their positions in the field and the second innings were under way.
Great leadership from the skipper Netty Bell kept the team focussed, cycling through bowlers to meet the oncoming batswomen. Lunn led the way for OG’s bowlers with the first wicket taken, and the OG women settled into their bowling, encouraged by some tight fielding, and all round excellent communication and teamwork. Soon enough the final batting pair were up, and OG prepared for some big hitting from Dinting player Lucy Darwin - the highest scoring batter in the league Week 1. The preparation was necessary, with some incredible technique and a flourish of 4s and 6s saw the score rising towards Old Glossop’s 317. However, the final advance of runs wasn’t quite enough to catch the lead set, and soon enough the final ball of the match was bowled.
Final score
Old Glossop 317 - Dinting 273
Player of the match nominated by Dinting was Becca Hodgkins sponsored by Glossop Ladies Hockey Club. A strong performance batting, bowling and fielding today with a wicket taken as well as a catch. Lucy Darwin received the OG nomination in return.
As always, a huge thank you to our travelling supporters, including the adorable Dora, and to umpire Steve Draper for his ongoing support for the women’s team.
As it stands, Old Glossop have taken 2 wins for 2 matches in the Mam Tor Women’s DCCL Softball league, but will not be complacent. A couple of big games ahead, with a home fixture set against Buxton on Tuesday 21st May. The ladies will be playing at home and would love support at the club. Please come down to watch for a 18:30 start.
