April Newsletter

Updated: Apr 2, 2021

GO GO GO!!

We now know the 2021 season is set to begin on time. After the ECB released its anticipated return to cricket roadmap the 2021 D&C season can start on the 24th April. I’m sure you will agree after the last year this is great news to not only be able to start on time but get a full season this year.

Derek Slack

5th Feb 1935 - 2nd March 2021

Everyone was deeply saddened to hear the terrible news that Old Glossop legend Derek Slack had passed away early last month. President Paul Eyre posted a fitting tribute to Derek on social media & online.

Dereks funeral was held on the 23rd March at Old Glossop Parish Church. More than 60 people were at the club to see Derek's coffin leave for his funeral service. You can read the Glossop Chronicles poignant farewell to Old Glossop Legend here.

Plans have been discussed on how to honour Derek’s almost lifetime contribution to OGCC. It has been agreed that the honour best fitting of Derek’s legacy is to name the OGCC pavilion

‘The Derek Slack Pavilion’. Rest in peace Derek.

March Highlights

New Signing

ICYMI - At the beginning of the month we announced our second signing of the winter. Dane Froggett joins us from Barnsley Woolley Miners. We are excited to see what Dane has to offer and hope he can strengthen our batting top order. Welcome to OG Dane!

Senior Fixtures Released

All the 2021 D&C league & cup fixtures have now been released. We have also drawn Apperknowle CC in the 2nd round of the Village Cup to be played on the 9th May. All fixtures are available on our website.

New U19 Format

For 2021, a new under 19’s league has been set up by the D&C in an innovative F15 format! We think this is a fantastic idea and will hopefully retain & revive numerous younger players stuck in between junior & senior cricket. More information to come shortly on this as well as junior fixtures.

Kit Arrival

The bulk orders of playing shirts, T20 shirts, hoodies & T20 pants has arrived from ICON. We will begin handing these out at senior training (1st April) or junior training/registration (6th & 16th April).

Club Tie

We are in the process of ordering a club tie that can be worn for all club and league presentations, or simply just around the house if you’re a die hard OG supporter. If you are interested in purchasing one, please contact Lenny Allsopp for more information.

April Events

Training Begins

The first official senior training begins tonight, Thursday 1st April. With no winter nets and massive competition for places this year, the captains are expectant to see lots of faces down at the ground this evening.

Pre-Season Working Party

While work is already underway on preparing the square for play. We are planning to have some pre-season working parties over the next couple of weekends. We will have to work in small groups & adhere to social distancing to ensure we stick to government guidelines around volunteering restrictions. If you can spare an hour or two it really does share the load, as we’ve seen in previous weeks with the hardcore shifting & the mess the birds had made.

April Committee Meeting

April’s committee meeting again is to be held virtually on the 6th April at 7pm. Meeting details will follow shortly.

Virtual Awards

The virtual presentation filming for the 2020 season awards is taking place on Sunday 11th April at the pavilion. Once filmed the footage will be edited and posted to the OG social media pages prior to the new season starting.

Junior Registration Night

Junior Registration night is Friday 16th April. We are very fortunate this year to have acquired Alex Newby (Lancashire CC Level 3 coach) to join our Friday night coaching team. As I’m sure you will agree this is a great opportunity for the youngsters to get quality cricket coaching in a welcoming family environment.

Season Start Date

First game of the season is scheduled for the 24th April. The 1st team will be at home against High Lane, with the 2nd’s travelling over the hill to play Staylbridge. We are hoping to have a mixed team friendly the week before the season, 17th April, if the weather allows.

Ladies Cricket 2021

We are actively looking for women & girls aged 13+ to join the new & exciting OG Ladies Softball Team for this coming season. Contact oldglossopcricketclub@gmail.com to register your interest.
